"Understanding Gum Recession: A Comprehensive Overview Without Overwhelming You"

Gum recession is a significant problem that can occur frequently and sometimes unexpectedly. In this article, we aim to provide you with a detailed understanding of gum recession without overwhelming you.

What is Gum Recession?

Gum recession is when the gum line recedes below the normal level, exposing the root surface of the tooth due to certain reasons. It occurs when the gum and the junction between the tooth and its root (the enamel-cementum border) move downward, resulting in an unaesthetic appearance, which often leads our patients to complain.

Causes of Gum Recession:

The most common causes of gum recession include incorrect or insufficient brushing techniques that lead to the accumulation of food debris and bacterial plaque between and on the surfaces of the teeth. Other contributing factors can be teeth grinding, pen biting, and similar negative habits. Additionally, structural abnormalities in the gums, misalignment of teeth, traumatic surgical procedures, and the presence of frenulum (the connective tissue between the lips and cheeks) close to the teeth can lead to gum recession as a result of misalignment.

How to Recognize Gum Recession?

Although patients may sometimes notice gum recession, it is generally identified through a clinical examination by the dentist. Normally, the root surfaces of the teeth are covered by gum tissue. However, when gum recession occurs, the root surfaces, which are more yellowish in color compared to normal teeth, become visible. Patients may also experience sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures and increased sensitivity to acidic foods, even if there are no cavities.

Treatment of Gum Recession:

There are various treatment methods for gum recession. First and foremost, the cause of the recession should be determined and addressed. Depending on the extent of the recession, simple and preventive techniques or gum procedures can be applied for treatment.

Is it Possible to Stop Gum Recession?

By eliminating the factors causing gum recession, its progression can be halted.

Can Dental Implants or Veneers be Applied to Teeth with Gum Recession?

There is no contraindication for dental implantation or veneer application on teeth with gum recession. Applying porcelain veneers to areas with receding gums may result in a longer and less aesthetic appearance. Nowadays, we can resolve such problems by adding gum-colored porcelain to the area of recession, achieving a more natural look.

Tips for Healthy Gum:

Regular and careful oral hygiene practices are crucial for maintaining healthy gums. Brushing the teeth at least twice a day for a minimum of two minutes is essential. Additionally, individuals should undergo dental check-ups every 6 months. Regular dental cleanings are also recommended to catch potential problems early. Factors such as smoking, diabetes, and misaligned teeth can facilitate the development and exacerbate the severity of gum problems. Therefore, individuals with such conditions are advised to be more attentive and dedicated to maintaining gum health.
